This study is aimed to review the concept of health literacy, trends of related studies, and the policy implications and tasks of this field. Policies on the health literacy may reinforce the national healthcare system more sustainable. Recently, with the acceleration of environmental changes in healthcare including rapid aging in population structure and adoption of high technologies into the area of healthcare, health-related information and health literacy are becoming more important and direct factor to impact Koreans¡¯ healthcare behavior. This has many implications for the future development of the healthcare system. Based on the review of this study, active researches into health-related information need to be conducted, and a monitoring system on the health literacy level needs to be developed and implemented as major political agenda. In addition, programs to improve Korean lay people¡¯s health literacy level are necessary to develop for a more sound healthcare system, with a high priority in national health policy.
